Latin superstar singer Facundo Cabral assassinated in Guatemala

Facundo Cabral, one of Latin America's most famous folk singers, was shot and killed on Saturday in the Guatemalan capital.

The 74-year-old Argentine singer and novelist was on his way to Guatemala's main airport when men with rifles attacked his vehicle, hitting him with at least eight bullets, said city fire department spokesman Jose Rodriguez. He said Cabral's concert promoter also was wounded. The motive was not clear.

A firefighter at the scene said colleagues saw two black vehicles pull up and open fire on Cabral's white Range Rover and the beige Chevrolet Tahoe accompanying the singer.

Police spokesman Donald Gonzalez said agents apparently found one of the vehicles used in the attack, abandoned along the highway to El Salvador. It was pocked with bullet holes and spent cartridges were found inside.

President Alvaro Colom's office said in a statement that authorities were investigating whether the shooting was robbery-related or a targeted attack. Cabral had been in Guatemala on tour.
